If you haven't yet heard of the Somali-born rapper K'Naan (pronounced KAYNAAN) or his song "Wavin' Flag," you will ... very soon at the end of this article. The soaring, uplifting song -- with its catchy sing-along section and its positive lyrics -- was chosen a while back as the Coca-Cola's official promotional anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and has spread like wildfire around the world.
According to K'Naan's website, the song has reached the No. 1 spot in 11 different countries, through various versions of the "celebration" mix with new World Cup-oriented lyrics. These versions feature artists from different nations sharing vocal duties with K'Naan, from Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram (for the Arabic version) to Spanish superstar David Bisbal (the Spanish version) and an international version (in English) featuring will.i.am and David Guetta.
Videos of the many versions of "Wavin' Flag" have garnered close to 20 million views on YouTube, helped in no small part by the song's use in Coca-Cola's World Cup commercials and other promotional efforts.
K'Naan performed "Wavin' Flag" at the world cup kick off concert. Thousands of people in the concert audience could be heard singing along with songs's chorus:
"When I get older, I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom
Just like a waving flag
So wave your flag, now wave your flag..."
